Hello dear readers, thanks for visiting the Gospel Exposition blog again. We really appreciate your continual support and presence.
Today will be the beginning of one of new episodes titled “God’s Generals”. We are including this episode so that we can carefully learn from men and women of God doing exploits for his kingdom. I pray that as we read about their lives, our stories will also be told in ages to come in Jesus name.
Our God’s general for this week is Pastor E.A Adeboye.
Whenever I think about this great man of God, a verse of the Bible usually comes to mind.
That verse is Zechariah 4:10, which says “despise not the days of small beginnings”.
Pastor Adeboye was born on March 2nd, 1942 into a humble family in the village of Ifewara, Osun state, located in the South-Western part of Nigeria. He often referred to his family as very poor because even the poor called them poor. Pastor Adeboye had a strong desire to attend school in spite of his background.
When he was admitted into Ilesha Grammar school, he developed an aptitude for science, particularly the subject of Mathematics which he chose to pursue at the university level. He was admitted to the University of Nsukka but later had to move to the University of Ibadan. At the end of his four year course in the university, he obtained his B.Sc. In Mathematics and subsequently obtained his PhD. in applied Mathematics from the University of Lagos.
He later proceeded to work as a lecturer in the University of Lagos and Ilorin. A major motive for his academic pursuit was his desire to become the youngest Vice Chancellor of any one of the top Universities in Nigeria. To the glory of God, this was not to be, as a greater career awaited him in the service of the Lord Jesus.
He joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1973, where he began working for the Church founder – Pastor Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi as a sermon translator. In 1981, Pastor Adeboye was appointed the General Overseer of the church, taking over from the Papa Akindayomi, who had died the previous year.
Under his leadership, RCCG currently has several branches globally in about 196 nations of the world, including over 14,000 branches in Nigeria. Pastor Adeboye is happily married to Pastor Foluke Adeboye, with whom he has 4 children who are also serving God in their various capacities.
Things to learn from his life
- Despite his poor background, he was hardworking and did not give up. Don’t say because your parents are poor, that there is no hope for you. Shun despondency. Diligence will make you stand before Kings. “Do you see a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before unknown men.” – Proverbs 22:29
- He holds education in high esteem. He got to the acme of his career and excelled. “Get wisdom, get understanding; forget not; nor turn away from the words of my mouth.” – Proverbs 4:5
- He understands and practices the principle of Godly giving and philanthropy. He has shared countless of testimonies of how he gave and it was restored bountifully to him. “Give, and it shall be given to you, good measure pressed down and shaken together and running over, they shall give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you measure, it shall be measured to you again.” – Luke 6:38.
