THE WISDOM OF THE WISE MEN

Hello brethren,

Welcome to another episode on this blog. Today, we will be looking at the wisdom of the wise men in the scripture. Be blessed as you read.

Matthew 2 (KJV)

1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,

After the birth of Christ Jesus, some men, having seen the star of the child, came to Jerusalem to see the child and at the same time worship Him. These men were referred to as Wise men. Why this adjective?  Were they really wise? Why the compliment?  Let us delve further in this study to see, at least, some of their wisdom.

Matthew 2 (NKJV)

1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,

2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

5 So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:

6 ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’  ”

7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared.

8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.”

9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

From the passage, we can infer some important and priceless wisdom, which every believer should possess and utilize. These include:

  1. The men were sure of what they saw, an unusual star, the star of a King.

Matthew 2: 2

…For we have seen His star in the East…

Men of wisdom are assured and convinced of the things they know. They are not double minded to the Spirit’s convictions. Jam. 4:8.

  1. They were not too wise in themselves to ask questions about things they do not know. They were wise enough to have visited Jerusalem, but they do not know the exact place, therefore, they made necessary enquiries.

Matthew 2:2

Where is He who have been born a king of the Jews?…

Men of wisdom are men that do not think highly of themselves. They would always want to listen to what others have to say, they are not the know-it-alls. No pride is found in the lives of men of wisdom.

  1. They knew the reason why they left the East in the first place, which is to worship Him that was born.

Matthew 2:2

…and have come to worship Him.

Men of wisdom do not embark on a blind journey. They are always driven by a purpose.

  1. They were focused. They did not miss the star after they left Herod’s palace.

Matthew 2:9

When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.

It does not matter the circumstances, men of wisdom are men of focus.

  1. They were conscious of their purpose. The men saw the young Jesus and worshipped Him. It is important to know that this was the reason they left the East for Jerusalem. They worshiped Him with their life and their gifts.

Matthew 2:11

And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and  worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and  myrrh.

Men of wisdom know and pursue their life’s purpose. Also, we can learn here that he who is thankful and worship God with his life and gifts is wise.

  1. They were spiritual

Matthew 2:12

Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

Men of wisdom are men of the spirit. They are always attentive to the Spirit’s leading. True wisdom follows God’s direction and obeys His rules.

Dear beloved, the scripture is given for our learning and we have seen some of the wisdom exhibited by these wise men. They were not just given the name “wise men”, they were wise indeed. It is important for us as believers to move and go about our daily activities with the consciousness of Christ Who is our Wisdom from God, in our heart. 1 Cor.1:30. Let us walk in wisdom in all our dealings, God expects this from us, Eph. 5:15, and is willing to give more and more when we ask. Jam. 1:5.

You may want to say this prayer as I conclude; I walk circumspectly in wisdom for Christ is my wisdom. I am wise in all my dealings in Jesus’ name. Amen.

We believe you have been blessed by this post. Kindly share with friends and family. You can as well ask questions if you have any, and don’t forget to join us on Tuesday for another encounter. Thank you and God bless you.
