Hello dear reader, Welcome to another episode on The Gospel Exposition Blog. I believe you are going to be blessed by the reading of this article.
Today, our teaching is centred on Sound Doctrine. What is sound doctrine and why is it important? I pray that your eyes of understanding is enlightened. Amen.
WHAT IS SOUND DOCTRINE ?
Doctrine is defined as teaching or what is learnt through the teaching. That is, what is taught or learnt as regards the Faith.
Sound doctrine are the teachings of Christ or in other words, the things learnt from Christ or His teachings and His revelation by the Spirit in the epistles.
“2 John 1:9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.”
“Galatians 1:6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel”
The doctrine of Christ is the teaching of Christ and this is sound doctrine. Every teaching given by anyone must align to this for them to be a sound doctrine.
IMPORTANCE OF SOUND DOCTRINE
1.) Sound doctrine makes an unbeliever wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
There are different teachings in the world today patterned according to the thought or philosophy of a pastor, church or denomination. These, although in an attempt to get an unbeliever saved is weak in that it is superficial and would make such people baby Christians after salvation. There’s no thought or philosophy outside what Christ has revealed to us by the Spirit in the epistles. Therefore, sound doctrine is what can save and make one mature. An unbeliever that is poorly fed, although saved by believing and confessing Christ, wouldn’t grow to the stature he is expected to grow. Sound doctrine alone has the capacity to save and nourish for growth. 2 Timothy 3:15-17, Romans 1:16, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. –
2.) Sound doctrine matures a believer.
Feeding on sound doctrine makes believers’ grow and mature. It makes them complete and equipped for good works. They then become confident to produce supernatural manifestations in a honourable and dignified way giving glory to God. Sound doctrine convinces, rebukes and exhorts a believer. It makes them whole. 2 Timothy 4:2.
Any congregation without focus on sound doctrine, or any congregation that accepts any message anyhow in so far as it produce the desired results, can easily be deceived or manipulated by the devil. We must therefore be fed on sound doctrine as we grow in Christ.
Additional texts on sound doctrine
“2 Timothy 3:15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
“2 Timothy 4:1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at a His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”
“2 John 1: 9- 11.
9 Whoever transgresses d and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.”
17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.”
“Titus 2: 1
1 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine”
Any other doctrine aside the doctrine of Christ (which is sound doctrine) should be discarded. Don’t welcome or receive it. They won’t make you grow to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
You may want to ask how to know a sound doctrine. This is the easiest way to know it. View and screen every teaching you hear with the word of God. And this is achieved by using Acts’ and the epistles’ lenses to view the gospels and the Old Testament. It requires diligent study. By this, you will be able to rightly divide the word of truth and won’t be tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine.
In conclusion, seek for sound doctrine and make sound doctrine your determining factor for joining any congregation of believers’ wherever you find yourself. Do not stay where you are being fed with junks. Feed on sound doctrine and stay healthy and strong. The grace of God be with you. Amen.
