John 10: 9-11(NIV) — “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
In the scriptural passage above, Jesus refers to himself as the gate. This proclamation is one of the seven “I AM” statements that was recorded throughout the Biblical account of John. These “I AM” statements point to His divinity and unique identity as God becoming man.
In John 10:9, Jesus says He is the GATE. He did not say He is one of the gates. He said “I am the Gate”. This points to the exclusivity of his person, power and purpose. Only Jesus is the way to salvation. Jesus is the only means whereby you can receive eternal life. There is no other way. Jesus is the only way.
Jesus is also our good Shepherd. John 10:11. I can’t exhaust the myriad of benefits you can enjoy by making Jesus your shepherd. Jesus laid down His life for you, for everyone. However, receiving his finished works on the cross of Calvary ultimately depends on you.
For you to deeply understand the significance of Jesus as the gate and the good Shepherd, it is important that I show you the cultural significance of the whole concept of shepherds.
Over two thousand years ago when Jesus was alive, shepherding was a very popular occupation. Country side shepherds usually would keep their flocks in good weather away from danger. The sheep pen usually is nothing more than piled up rocks placed on each other to form a wall with a small open space to enter. Through this small open space, the shepherd directs the sheep into safety at night. Since there was no gate to close, the shepherd would ensure that animals are kept safe (away from wild animals) by sleeping at the entrance. In literal terms, the shepherd becomes the actual gate, keeping the sheep from all forms of danger.
This is the same thing Jesus can do for you. He is the gate. He is the good shepherd. Run to him today. He can keep you from all dangers, be it evil powers, ravening wolves or death. He’s powerful enough to guarantee your safety.
Any one who preaches any way other than Jesus is a false teacher. Jesus is the only way to God and he is ready to restore you back to God. You can only find the peace you so much desire in God’s presence. Accept Jesus today. Repent of your sins and enter the GATE to gain access God.
If you’re ready to accept Jesus, say this Prayer of Salvation: My heavenly Father, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me and wash me with the blood of Jesus. I believe you raised up Jesus from the grave. From today, I make Jesus the Lord and Saviour of my life. I will follow him for the rest of my days. Amen.
