Brighten your Corner

Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do,
Do not wait to shed your light afar,
To the many duties ever near you now be true,
Brighten the corner where you are.

Chorus:
Brighten the corner where you are!
Brighten the corner where you are!
Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar;
Brighten the corner where you are!

I love the first verse of this very popular hymn. It is an admonishment and also a command to us as Christians. God wants us to shine as light wherever we find ourselves. Our duty our Christians is to shine and not to strive to produce the light. The light has already been deposited in us, we just have to express it, we have to shine.

Matthew 5:14-16 (KJV) Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

We are a city set on a hill. Now more than ever, our lives are set up high on a hill for everyone to see and emulate. Like flags bearing the emblem of Christ, we must sway to the rhythms of God’s commandments and uphold Christian virtues so that many may come to Christ through us. It is a well know fact that people don’t read Bible anymore, what they do is study our lives and look at our lives. We must hold ourselves to the highest standards and never compromise.

Acts 9:36 (KJV) Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.

In this verse and the verses that follow, we are presented with the life of Dorcas. Her life was an example of someone who spread the fragrance of Christ around her. She was full of good works and she gave gifts to the poor. We must emulate her character and spread God’s goodwill far and near. Even in that little corner or environment we find ourselves, we must shine our light. Doing this will bring God’s blessings upon us and bring many to righteousness.

Make it a point of duty to shine as the light that you are. Let people see Jesus in you from now henceforth. If you were blessed with this post. Kindly share with your family and friends.
