The Excellency of God – Knowing His Character and Will

Psalms 89:6 (KJV) For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?

Psalms 8:1 (KJV) O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

The excellency of God is revealed in His character, in the way he acts and in the way he brings events to pass. Knowing God’s character and his will is pivotal to understanding him and experiencing his excellency. It is God who has made us, and for his own pleasure has he created us, he has kept us alive to bring his will to pass.

As Martin Luther once said “Our thoughts of God are too human”. We must be careful not to think of God as human. We must regard Him with the highest level of reverence and honour if we are to know him better. Knowing God will so much enlarge our intellect and expand our soul, it would bring us to a place where we continually abide in his glory.

Our understanding about God will largely determine the level of our Christianity, and the frequency at which we experience the supernatural. Our level of desiring knowledge about the personality of God will also determined how far we would go in life and how much impact we would make as believer.

The Bible says:
“Daniel 11:32b (KJV) ……..but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.”

Spiritual exploits, academic breakthroughs, business ingenuity, medical advancement can all be obtained by wholesome a dedication to knowing God. Pursuing to know the excellency of God brings out the best in you. It brings out excellence in you. I dare to say that, heaven measures your level of excellence in relation to the level of your desire to know God (His character and will).

A desire to know the character of God also deepens your trust in him.

“Psalms 9:10 (KJV) And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.”

Those who know God, those who know his name will put their trust in Him. If you know and really understand that God is a faithful God, you put your trust in him to be faithful. If you also understand that God is a holy God and how he has demonstrated his holiness, you will put your trust in him to make you holy till you become like Christ. That’s the way it works. Any knowledge of God that you understand through diligent scriptural study will definitely affect how you think and will impact the level of your trust in God. Our lives would be much better if we dedicated more time to knowing the character of God – what he wants and what he dislikes, then we would become more like his Son – Jesus, and do his good pleasure.

A question I know you’d be aching to ask is that how do I know God? To know God, you need to dedicate yourself to the study of the Bible. If you still think studying the Bible is just to fulfil all righteousness, you are quite mistaken. Studying the character of God through the Bible is the single most important way of getting a description of who God is. Do you really want to know the excellency and character of God? Then don’t take your quiet time with levity anymore. Don’t say the bible study and Sunday school classes are not as important as they say it is. Our disposition to opportunities to know more about the character of God is a true measure of our spiritual life and how much we wish to understand his ways.

Conclusively, our prayer life, our worship and perspective about life is as limited as our knowledge of God’s character. If we want to improve our worship, if we desire a divine, solution-providing and heightened perspective about challenges and problems, then our desire to understand the ways of God must be rekindled. I pray we would maximize every opportunity we have to know God more in Jesus name. Amen
